Still Life Drawing for Grades 1-3
Just a few simple materials create a still life study to introduce “observational drawing” to grades 1-3.
I like to focus the first few lessons of the year on drawing. These still life studies are easy for students to set up at their table. Makes for a great review or introduction of drawing skills and obsrvational drawing (drawing what we see). Students get to review or can be introduced to shadows and shading.
for the still life
- Dixie cups or paper cups
- color pencils
- white paper
Set up a cup & a few color pencils on a white piece of paper for each desk. The white paper will make it easier to see the shadow.
Take a moment to talk about observational drawing and then work step by step, breaking down the cup into simple shapes. Talking about the height and the space between the pencils before drawing them. Observe the shadows and shade them in on their drawing. Once the drawing and the shadow is complete, I let them take the colored pencils out of the cups and color in the pencils. Then, any details they want to add on the cup.
