Snowman Art Lesson: blending & shading pastels

SNOWMAN WINTER ART LESSON- blending & shading with pastel or chalk. This Snowman lesson was used in the classroom and as a community art project for close to 100 participants of all ages. It was such a hit and everyones artwork turned out beautiful. It is great for skill building, blending & shading techniques, and controlling new art mediums. Creating dimension, with lights, darks, and shadows.

These SNOWMEN can be taught in a classroom, at home, art camps, or after school enrichments programs. This is done with an assortment of dry pastels, but can also be done with Crayola DRAWING CHALK and white chalk. Oil pastels would work too.

It makes a great ART PROJECT to show. Ties in art with the WINTER holidays or the new year.

This is a great activity for grade levels K-5. An excellent resource for homeschoolers, teachers, and parents. SNOWMAN- WINTER ART LESSON makes a great Winter camp art project. It can be taught to a group of different skill levels or ages, and can be offered as a choice based art materials project.

ALL MATERIALS FOR THIS LESSON CAN BE FOUND ON MY AMAZON STORE

YOU’LL NEED:

  • PENCIL & ERASER
  • BLUE CARDSTOCK or CONSTRUCTION PAPER
  • AN ASSORTMENT OF SOFT PASTELS or CRAYOLA DRAWING CHALK & WHITE CHALK

Use 3 simple circle shapes, for the snowman.

Each circle will have shading with a dark, cool color on the one side, and a light on the other side. Use a finger to gently blend towards the center of each circle.

Add in the graound and a dark cool color for the shadow of the snowman.

This background is just a suggested technique, students can create any type of background for their snowman. Then add any details to your snowman, nose, buttons, eyes, scarf, hat, stick arms.

This lesson provides structure for the first steps, then its pretty much open ended from that point. Giving students freedom and artistic liberty to create their snowman.

EXPERT TIPS:

-Discuss with students some rules about using chalk or pastels.

-Be aware of where you are placing your hands, so it doesnt smear.

-Blow of or shake off the dust as you go. Messy mats on the tables are advised for this project.

SUAVE OR AQUANET HAIRSPRAY works great as a fixative for the chalk or pastel artwork.
