POLAR BEAR PAINTINGS are a fun winter art lesson for mixing variations of blues. You can even take a step further and make it a value lesson- mixing a single color from light to dark.
These polar bears can be taught in a classroom, at home, or for remote learning. Acrylic paints are not necessary for this winter art lesson. Any art medium can be used to add in color: watercolor, color pencil, crayon, pastel.

YOU’LL NEED:
- PENCIL & ERASER
- PAINTING PAPER
- BLACK SHARPIE
- PAINT: white, blue, turquoise & gray
- BRUSH
- PAPER TOWEL
EXPERT TIP: Each student should have a paper plate with a squeeze of white, turquoise, and blue, for mixing variations of colors. They only need a paper towel for wiping their brush. A water cup is not necessary, only for cleaning brushes at the end of the lesson. With lessons like this, I just have everyone bring their brush to a soapy waterfilled cup at the end of class.
Use simple shapes and start the drawing with an oval body shape and a circle head. Add on legs. Once you have those large simple shapes you can add on smaller shapes, such as ears, feet, face. Create the background and add a few icebergs in the water.
Paint in various blues from light to dark in the background. The polar bear can be left the white of the paper and no need to paint it in. Optional to use some gray for shading on the legs and above the nose.
