WELCOME FRIENDS

I’m Maria Galloway, Art teacher & artist. I’ve gathered up some of my art lessons that get me through the school year. Lessons for Kinder through Middle School. These can be used by fellow art teacher to help build your art curriculum, a way to add in weekly art lessons for non-art teacher, for parents of home schoolers, or for facilitators for camps, enrichment settings, play groups, etc.

ART LESSONS

ABOUT ME

I’ve been teaching and developing Art programs in Southern California since 2004.

Art has been my constant companion, a lifelong passion that has woven its way through my existence. My artistic journey has been nurtured by studies, including the pursuit of Studio Art at San Diego State University, Ceramics at California State University, Northridge, and Figurative Art at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art. My curiosity and commitment led me even further, delving into the realm of Social Emotional Art Therapy at UCLArts & Healing, where I discovered the profound interplay between art and emotional well-being.

In 2011, I co-founded the Los Angeles Art School, Viridian Art Academy, a nurturing space for aspiring artists to learn, grow, and flourish. This endeavor reflects my commitment to fostering artistic growth and nurturing the creative spirit within our community. In 2015, I embarked on yet another venture, founding this blog for art educators, “Art Teacher in LA” is a platform dedicated to sharing insights, ideas, and inspiration for fellow art teachers.

I mostly teach in-studio and run the behind the scenes operation of it all. I continue to teach middle school art at Hesby Oaks Charter School, and jump in to on-campus after school art enrichment classes when I’m needed.

I have been dedicating a lot of time the past few years working on my own art journey again. Take a peek at my paintings at ReGallowayArt.com

  1. I am a certified K-8 teacher, but this year I’m teaching 7&8th grade Art, too I really need art ideas to get us through 5 day a week projects! Thanks!

    1. 5 days a week!!! That’s tough!
I do try often to have projects that span over at least 2 days. I did pixel portraits, which was great. They had to graph it out and mix skin colors & paint in with a tiny brush, square by square. There’s a photo on my Instagram.com/artteacherinla

    2. Try paper mache. Make large animals, alien or tribal masks, large carnival masks starting with a box or large stuffed paper grocery bags. I have children make basic shapes with newspaper, and details with cardboard, small tubes, containers, sponges, etc. Use 2″masking tape to hold it together. I found flour and water is a great and cheap glue to use to dip strips into. Mix at least 1 hour ahead so lumps dissolve. It’s so much fun!

  2. I work in an Afterschool Program and we like to do different types of
art projects. We are currently working on a haunted house for Halloween. We made it out of cardboard boxes, it’s three stories
high. It’s easy because you can use recycled boxes. You need masking tape, boxes (Different sizes), scissors, a box cutter and
    washable paint.
    scissors, a box cutter,
